Supernova Neutrino Detection in Borexino

چکیده

We calculated the expected neutrino signal in Borexino from a typical Type II supernova at a distance of 10 kpc. A burst of around 110 events would appear in Borexino within a time interval of about 10 s. Most of these events would come from the reaction channel ν̄e + p → e+ + n, while about 30 events would be induced by the interaction of the supernova neutrino flux on 12C in the liquid scintillator. Borexino can clearly distinguish between the neutral-current excitations 12C(ν, ν ′)12C∗ (15.11MeV) and the charged-current reactions C(νe, e−)12N and C(ν̄e, e+)12B, via their distinctive event signatures. The ratio of the charged-current to neutral-current neutrino event rates and their time profiles with respect to each other can provide a handle on supernova and nonstandard neutrino physics (mass and flavor oscillations).

Detection of supernova neutrinos by neutrino-proton elastic scattering

We propose that neutrino-proton elastic scattering, n1p→n1p , can be used for the detection of supernova neutrinos in scintillator detectors. Though the proton recoil kinetic energy spectrum is soft, with Tp .2En /M p , and the scintillation light output from slow, heavily ionizing protons is quenched, the yield above a realistic threshold is nearly as large as that from n̄e1p→e1n . In addition,...

We present a brief informative overview of a broad ranges of subjects, the solar, the reactor, the geo and the supernova neutrinos (but without excluding possible biases), the topics which consist of the session “Neutrino Physics around MeV Energies” in NOW2006. Contrary to the naive expectation, the field is found to be very active in improving the performance of existing detectors, and in pre...

Supernovae and Neutrinos

A long-standing problem in supernova physics is how to measure the total energy and temperature of νμ, ντ , ν̄μ, and ν̄τ . While of the highest importance, this is very difficult because these flavors only have neutral-current detector interactions. We propose that neutrino-proton elastic scattering, ν + p → ν + p, can be used for the detection of supernova neutrinos in scintillator detectors. It...

Borexino: a Real Time Liquid Scintillator Detector for Low Energy Solar Neutrino Study

Borexino is a large unsegmented calorimeter featuring 300 tons of liquid scintillator, contained in a 8.5 meter nylon vessel, viewed by 2200 PMTs. The main goal of Borexino is the study, in real time, of low energy solar neutrinos, and in particular, the monoenergetic neutrinos coming from Be, which is one of the missing links on the solar neutrino problem. The achievement of high radiopurity l...

The Calibration and Monitoring Systems for Borexino

The goal of the new generation of solar neutrino experiments is to obtain decisive evidence for neutrino oscillations, widely considered to be the explanation of the long-standing solar neutrino problem, and to discriminate between the allowed solutions. The Borexino solar neutrino detector, presently in construction at the Gran Sasso underground laboratories in Italy, aims at the detection of ...
